In November last year, the ASASE Foundation reached a major milestone with the official commissioning of the Juaben Recycling Plant in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. This facility represents an important step forward in the organization’s mission to transform plastic waste into economic opportunity while promoting sustainable production systems.
Located in New Juaben, Kumasi, the plant is equipped with advanced extrusion technology designed to melt and pelletize crushed plastic materials. With a production capacity of 700kg per hour, the facility converts plastic waste into high-quality reusable raw materials that can be reintegrated into manufacturing processes. By transforming discarded plastics into valuable resources, the plant contributes to reducing environmental pollution while supporting Ghana’s growing circular economy.
The Juaben facility forms a key component of the ASASE Foundation’s “Close the Loop of Plastic Packaging” project. The initiative focuses on building a more sustainable plastic value chain by improving recycling infrastructure and supporting responsible waste management practices. At the heart of the project is a strong commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs, providing them with opportunities to participate in and benefit from the recycling and circular economy ecosystem.
Through training, capacity building, and inclusive participation in recycling activities, women are gaining the skills and resources needed to build sustainable livelihoods while contributing to environmental stewardship in their communities.
The commissioning of the Juaben Recycling Plant demonstrates how innovation, sustainability, and social impact can work together to address pressing environmental challenges. By strengthening local recycling capacity and creating economic opportunities within the plastic waste value chain, the facility is helping to move Ghana closer to a future where waste is no longer discarded, but transformed into a valuable resource.
