Plastic waste pollution is one of Ghana’s most pressing environmental challenges. Every year, thousands of tons of plastic end up in landfills, water bodies, and communities, threatening ecosystems and public health.
The ASASE Foundation, in collaboration with City Waste Recycling (CWR) and SESA Recycling, has taken the bold steps to turn plastic waste into valuable resources while empowering communities and fostering a circular economy.
The consortium recognizes that tackling plastic waste requires an integrated and scalable approach- hence, this initiative focuses on waste collection, recycling, and product manufacturing to ensure that plastic waste is not landfilled but is transformed into valuable and reusable materials in Ghana.
With funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the project will significantly boost waste collection, recycling, and product manufacturing in Ghana. The funding will help prevent over 10,000 tons of plastic waste annually from polluting the environment while creating sustainable livelihoods for waste collectors in Ghana especially, women.
Under this initiative, ASASE Foundation will:
- Create awareness on segregation of plastic in the Ashanti and Western regions of Ghana that will help prevent over 5,600 tons of plastic waste from polluting the environment annually. The project has started implementation in the Juaben Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region and by the 4th quarter in 2025, it will move to the Western region.
- Indirectly engage 400 waste pickers for the collection and directly employ 40 personnels, with more than 50% being women and young people, in both regions. Provide medical insurance cover for the waste pickers in ASASE’s collection network.
- Involve 40 schools in both regions to educate them on waste management, segregation and collection of plastics in schools. This is aimed at long- term behavior change among pupils.
- Conduct baseline and endline assessment by the Monitoring and Evaluation team to assess the impact of the project.
- Provide logistics including PPEs for the collection network.
This initiative will also align with Ghana’s National Plastic Action Partnership and serve as a blueprint for other African nations looking to implement sustainable waste management solutions.
Plastic waste pollution is a challenge we can tackle together. ASASE Foundation invites individuals, businesses, and policymakers to support, collaborate, and participate in this transformative initiative.
- Recycle with us – Drop off your plastic waste at any of our operational sites in Katamanso, Tema West, Weija Gbawe and Juaben Municipality.
- Support the Initiative – Encourage people to be responsible in waste disposal.
